Sept. 28, 2016 – Why are so many Players getting hurt?

Is it me or does it seem like there are MORE injuries in the NFL than in the past? The most recent collective bargaining agreement, signed in 2011, made major changes to the way teams practiced during the off season, training camp, and during the regular season. There are less days with pads and no two a day practices. Is this why there are so many injuries? Did the agreement actually hurt players when it was meant to make the game safer and have less injuries? Are players not “game” ready when kickoff comes?

Concussions are down which is a great thing. But is that due to simply changes made in the rules to attempt to decrease concussions? Players aren’t allowed to hit or basically play defense the way we knew it years ago. It’s changed incredibly just in the years, ok, decades, I’ve been watching. Many of the old time players can’t believe how much it’s changed. Football as we knew it is long gone.

So if it’s supposed to be safer why are there so many injuries? Players now practice mainly without using pads so they’re not really hitting each other. Now I agree during practice you can’t have players of the same team hitting each other like in a game cause you sure don’t want your own team member to take out another player. But players have to be somewhat in shape and ready to take the hits before the game. Should there be more days in pads? I’d like to research and see how the number of injuries now really compares to the number say in the 60’s and 70’s when training camp was brutal and defense was about taking a guy out. I mean could Dick Butkus and Ed O’Branovich play the game today with all the changes? Would they want to play it?

So with so many players going down, can it be used as an excuse for losing? Stay tuned.

Aug. 13, 2016 – The Paint was Wrong?

Last Sunday evening was supposed to be the first pre-season game of 2016. I was so excited even if it was pre-season and not my team playing. I, like I know many times fans, just wanted football. Any football. I just needed football. It had been seven months since the Super Bowl. I’m not into watching baseball and hockey in Chicago ended too early this year. I just wanted some football.

Then an hour before the game is to start it’s announced the game is cancelled due to field conditions. Field conditions? It’s freaking sunny in Canton! What is wrong with the the field? It’s not like it was just used a week or so ago for a game. The Hall of Fame Enshrinement was there last night but that happens every year. The enshrinement Saturday night, game Sunday night. What is different?

Now don’t get me wrong. I certainly don’t want any player to get hurt so if it’s a safety issue, the absolute right decision was made. But because the wrong paint was used on the logo this is the reason? What? What? The wrong paint? Seriously? This field had been used once for the Super Bowl in New Orleans. It was used once! Ummm… Weren’t there logos on the field? The wrong paint was used? Unbelievable!

So the game was cancelled and we had to wait four days for football. Are there worse things going on in the world? Absolutely. I, as well as other fans, survived. Just please NFL, please, try to get the simple things right.

Aug. 23, 2015 – Football, football, football

Book cover for BlogI’m so excited! What a great weekend! There was football Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and now today, Sunday! AND there will be football tomorrow night! It’s like I died and went to football heaven! I have to remind myself it’s pre-season. You’re not going to see many of the starters.

Why am I so excited? Is this normal? Do others get this excited about pre-season football games? Or is it just excited that there’s football? Is it because my football bank account is overdrawn, in the negative? There’s not been any deposits since February.

Watching and listening to the crowd I don’t think I’m the only one. The crowd is cheering like the game really means something. I guess if we admit it, in someways it just might.

Aug. 19, 2015 – Love my new Bears bling ring!

IMG_1933Love my new ring! I got it when I went to the Pro Football Ultimate Fan Association meeting in Canton, OH, the weekend of the Hall of Fame. More on that in another blog. One of the other fans was selling football rings in team colors. How cool is that! I mean there was no question I had to have it. It was calling out, no screaming out my name. I couldn’t resist and there was no way I was going to think about it and wait. She only had one and I couldn’t chance the other female fans in the group, who just happen to have the same team colors, not necessarily the same team, buy it. No that just couldn’t happen and if it had that would have ruined the weekend. In less than 20 seconds it was mine. Everyone knows a girl can never have too much bling! I love to be sporting my team colors and if it sparkles all the better. We all know it’s the accessories that make the outfit. Bling rings, bracelets, earrings, necklace, watch, maybe even a little sparkle on the shirt. Can’t wait to go to the next game to wear it again. Or until the weekend when it’s an away game and well, it will be an all blue and orange day.

Aug. 11, 2015: Two days and counting

Two days and counting. Football season begins! Ok so not officially football season, but it’s football and after waiting over seven months to see my team play I’m counting it. Pre-season is not only the team’s time to get everything in order, it’s my time too. It is my opportunity to get back in the groove and make sure I’m ready for when the the season officially starts, our first “regular” season game. For the most part, after 20 seasons of being a season ticket holder, I have it down. For some reason though, I like knowing I have a two “practice” games to make sure I’ve remembered my radio to listen to the game broadcast, seat cushion, all jewelry, rings, bracelets, watch, necklace. Actually I really can’t remember a time I’ve forgotten anything. I usually have everything in order. Hopefully after the game Thursday, I’ll feel that way about my team.

Aug 10, 2015: The journey continues

cropped-Book-cover-for-Blog-e1439243037635.jpgI wrote Tailgating Tales: Diary of a Female Football Fan several years ago. It was a year long journey into my life as a diehard football fan. The book is a diary from training camp to training camp and traces how my love and passion for my football team encompasses my life.

Tailgating Tales was more than a play by play of one fan’s football season. It was about a passion for the game. It’s about loving something so much one’s life becomes totally immersed in it.

As all diehards know, being a true fan incorporates the depths of your soul. It was a brief look into mine.

It’s time to continue the journey.
